As Sony begins to reveal details on its next generation Playstation, it says it is prepared to invest as much as $1bn in fabs to produce chips for the popular video games console.
Sony is teaming up with Toshiba to help make some of the key components for the next Playstation model. The current version of the Playstation has sold more than 50 million units, making it one of the most successful consumer electronics products and Sony expects the next version to exceed those sales figures.
The next generation Playstation will be positioned as more than just a video games console and will feature many capabilities such as DVD and MPEG 2 playback that will enable it to act as the centre of a family entertainment system.
