Sony has licensed a number of cores including ARM’s ARM740T and Hitachi’s SH-1, SH-3 and SH-DSP Risc processors.
“We have taken these moves to widen the base of processor cores in our library for both internal and external customers,” said Dr Jalal Bagherli, deputy managing director of Sony Semiconductor Europe.
ARM740T is a Thumb processor with 8kbyte of on-chip cache, a write buffer and a memory protection unit. “We have worked closely with Sony Semiconductors on the definition and implementation of this new microprocessor core,” said Pete Magowan, v-p Europe for ARM.
Sony intends to use the ARM core in a range of digital multimedia consumer products to be announced in the coming months.
