ST inks in HP printhead deal
Richard Ball STMicroelectronics (ST) has announced a partnership with Hewlett Packard to develop integrated circuits for inkjet printer heads. While the companies have collaborated on printheads for awhile, this announcement formalises the arrangement. “We have been working together for five years and we have developed the new generation of HP printers using the technology,” said Andrea Cuomo, the v-p responsible for strategic partnerships at ST. The HP2000C printers have resolutions up to 600 dots/in. and print in colour at near photographic quality. But Cuomo says this must improve further: “There will be a need to have much better definition and be able to print photographs and print them quickly.” Digital cameras and the Internet are helping to drive the market for better printers, Cuomo said: “Also people will do their own printing rather than going to print houses.” Quality and speed are mainly determined by the printhead. ST’s printhead silicon combines control and power electronics with HP’s inkjet technology. Each printhead has 304 nozzles, each of which delivers just eight pico-litres of ink.
