STM to build 300mm line
David Manners SGS-Thomson Microelectronics is to build a 300mm wafer pilot line at its Crolles fab site near Grenoble. It will cost $500m and work on the building will start next year with the first wafers due to be processed in 2000. The line, which will be known as Crolles 2, will employ 600 researchers from SGS-Thomson. SGS-Thomson has also announced another $500m, 600 researcher project for non-volatile memory development.
