Globalstar has successfully launched another four satellites in its bid to have a low earth orbit network of 48 satellites offering low priced voice and Internet communications worldwide.
There are now 8 satellites in orbit and Globalstar plans to have 44 satellites in orbit by the end of this year, with the remaining satellites launched early next year.
“All of the testing of our first four satellites to date has been superb. We now have eight satellites in two adjacent orbital planes, allowing us to conduct further tests of key features of the Globalstar system,” said Globalstar CEO Bernard Schwartz.
The company has ordered 300,000 user terminals and is constructing gateways to begin offering commercial service in early 1999.
