Sun shining with Hitachi
Tom Foremski Continuing its push into embedded systems with Java, Sun Microsystems has announced a major deal with Hitachi. The Japanese firm will use Java and the JavaOS operating system in set-top boxes to be introduced over the coming months in Japan. A major roll out in other countries will follow next year. “We chose Sun’s JavaOS software as the base operating system because it allows fast and easy downloading of new network-based services on demand. Also, JavaOS software is available today, allowing Hitachi to roll out these set-top boxes right away,” said Shigehiro Tomita, general manager of Hitachi’s Space Systems Division.
