Sweet talk for Hitachi
David Manners Lernout and Hauspie of Belgium, the speech recognition specialists, is working to port its speech recognition technology onto Hitachi’s SH-5 microprocessor. In conjunction with the Hitachi – SGS-Thomson ‘Global Project’ to develop the 1,000Mips SH-5, this could be the ‘last project’ before overcoming the language barrier, reckons Dr Tsugio Makimoto, executive managing director of Hitachi Semiconductor. Hitachi and SGS-Thomson have just started developing the SH-5 processor. Engineers from the UK, as well as from France, Italy and Japan have moved to California to work with American engineers on the 100-man project. As well as the SH-5 development, Hitachi has a group working at its Central Research Laboratories in Tokyo to develop English-Japanese translation systems.
