Tagged prisoners get early release
Political Correspondent The new reliability of electronic tagging systems has opened the prison doors to a flood of releases. The Home Office has announced that 4,000 prisoners – one in 20 of the 64,261 prison population – are to be given early release provided they consent to being tagged. The releases will start with 200 tomorrow (Thursday) and will take four months. The prisoners released will be aged 18 or over and will be serving fewer than four years inside. They will have to observe strict conditions and be tagged for two months after being freed. Home Office sources said that early problems with the technology had been overcome and that expansion of the scheme was not just possible but desirable.
