Roy Rubenstein Iridium, the consortium putting up a 66 satellite constellation for global wireless digital communications, says it has now launched 63 satellites and has successfully tested digital voice and pager links. The first commercial services will begin before the end of the year. Two more satellite launches will complete the constellation. Motorola and Kyocera are manufacturing handsets to use the Iridium service which double as terrestrial cellular telephones. Motorola’s weighs 16oz/453g, has two hours talk time, 24 hours standby using lithium-ion batteries, and a 2.5 hours charge time.
