TI lights up Hitachi TVs
Tom Foremski Hitachi will use Texas Instruments’ (TI) digital light processing (DLP) technology to develop a large screen HDTV. TI has agreed to develop its DLP technology for HDTV applications with a 16:9 aspect ratio and will co-develop with Hitachi brighter projection optics. The first products based on the collaboration are expected in Japan and the US in the second half of 2000, followed by the European market at the end of next year. TI’s DLP technology comprises numerous tiny mirrors used to project a high definition image. The two companies hope to exploit growing markets for home theatre systems and the increasing number of digital satellite and terrestrial-based broadcast services.
