Level 3 Communications revealed plans for a high speed undersea Internet cable project that will be in place by September of next year and link US and European cities.
The company says it will spend between $600m and $800m to build the trans-Atlantic link and has signed an agreement with Tyco Submarine Systems to design and lay the cable. Level 3’s goal is to be able to link the high speed networks it is building in the US with those it is building in Europe. The trans-Atlantic cable will handle 1.28 terabits per second.
Level 3 is making large investments in building high speed networks for large cities and is constructing national networks linking those city networks. The company is betting on increasing demand for data bandwidth and the emergence of new types of applications that require high data throughput.
