UK ahead in implementing smartcards
Melanie Reynolds The UK is leading the way in Europe for implementing the use of smartcards as tickets on public transport. According to a survey by analysts Datamonitor, over 45 million smartcards will be used in Europe as public transport tickets in 2003. Of these over 12 million will be in the UK, a significant part of which will be for London Transport’s contactless smartcard system which will go live in August 2002. This will deal with six million daily passengers on buses and trains.
