UK firm links with Cadence
Steve Bush Fabless chip start-up Power X is sub-contracting part of its TeraChannel chipset design to Cadence in a $1m deal. “Cadence will be doing the floor planning, place and route and most of the synthesis,” said Power X finance director Colin May. TeraChannel is a an in-equipment hub-based network using 1Gbit/s serial links around a scalable (minimum 16 x 16-way) matrix switch. Applications are seen inside data-intensive equipment like multi-processor computers and ATM and Gigabit Ethernet switches. Product launch was originally due in August 1997 but this has been delayed and it is now expected to be at the end of this year. “Our potential customers asked us to make design changes,” said Tony Palmer, director of technical applications. There are three chips types in the set. StarCeptor is the 16 x 16-way x 2-plane switch. StarRouter is the network interface chip which takes parallel data from boards and serialises it for transmission . StarMaster is the network controller for message sorting, arbitration and scheduling.
