UK’s chip sales rise
Richard Wilson Growth in UK semiconductor sales could top nine per cent this year, according to the latest predictions from the Semiconductor Manufacturers Association. Figures to be published later this month by the SMA, which is part of the Federation of the Electronics Industry (FEI), will show that high value semiconductor product sales, which includes set-top box silicon and mobile phone chipsets, will be 14 per cent up in value terms on last year. The persistent sluggishness in the commodity memory market will drag the overall semiconductor growth figure back to nine per cent, says the SMA. Still this is a marked improvement on last year, when the SMA predicted a double digit fall in chip sales. Overall, the UK component market as a whole will only grow by five per cent in 1999.
