Unknown firm buys patent portfolio
Tom Foremski A single mystery buyer snapped up 45 potentially valuable microprocessor patents auctioned off by US firm Exponential Technology. More than 20 of the world’s largest chip makers competed for the coveted patent portfolio. The purchase could provide the buyer with protection from Intel’s legal army and allow it to compete with future Intel processors. “The final bid was probably considerably more than $5.1m (the first round bid), but it still seems cheap for what they got,” said Rich Belgard, a microprocessor patent expert and independent consultant. “I’ve no idea who the buyer was, but it is most likely Intel.” An Intel spokesman said: “We don’t comment on these types of issues.”
