Intel’s planned $420m acquisition of Chips & Technologies has come under closer scrutiny for possible antitrust implications with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requesting more information about Intel’s bid.
Intel says that the FTC request is normal practice for an acquisition of that kind but the FTC could be responding to complaints made by graphics chip companies that the acquisition will enable Intel to dominate the market for 3D graphics chips in notebook computers and eventually in desktop systems.
Intel said it will comply with the FTC requirement but this is the second time information has been asked for following a request made to Chips & Technologies. It could delay the acquisition by as much as three weeks.
