Motorola is the latest mobile phone manufacturer to team up with a UK cellular telephone operator for testing and implementing the next generation mobile phone technology.
Vodafone and Motorola will work together on field trials of the proposed UMTS third generation mobile phone technology, which is based on a wideband CDMA radio interface.
Motorola says it will deliver prototype wideband CDMA handsets to Vodafone in June. These will support ISDN and packet data transmissions at 64kbit/s in addition to basic cellular voice telephony.
The trials will support Vodafone’s plans to bid for one of the five UMTS mobile phone licences which will be auctioned by the government in the Autumn.
