VRML shifts away from 3D imaging
Roy Rubenstein Three-dimensional images are no longer the focus for the Internet graphics standard, the virtual reality modelling language (VRML). The goal is to promote VRML as a general purpose technology and establish it as a leading media format for the Internet, capable of being used over different bandwidths. “Gratuitous 3D demos are dead,” said David Frerichs, v-p of marketing of the VRML Consortium. “The growing momentum of VRML has led to an explosion of applications throughout the Web. No other Web media technology has that kind of versatility.”
