Wireless gaining ground
Svetlana Josifovska Wireless to the home telephone services will start to eat into the fixed line telephone market as wireless operators experience a ten-fold increase in their market by 2005, according to telecoms analyst Ovum. Wireless operators will be able to undercut and surpass fixed network operators leading to serious implications for telcos and cable companies, commented Kate Hewett, a consultant at Ovum: “Broadband wireless is a real threat to established fixed operators. It enables competitors to enter their most lucrative markets and target their best customers quickly and with little initial outlay,” said Hewett. Ovum forecasts that the worldwide market for all fixed wireless connections will increase from 13m to 145m by 2005. Market value will grow from its current level of $1bn to $15bn by the year 2005.
