WorldDAB Forum bids for digital domination
Svetlana Josifovska The WorldDAB Forum is planning a major digital audio broadcasting (DAB) campaign next year to lobby regions of the world which are considering other digital radio formats. WorldSpace plans to launch a service for the developing countries of Africa, South America and Asia. In turn, Lucent Technologies, Westinghouse and US Digital Radio plan to launch their own system in the US, dubbed IBOC. “We are now launching a major campaign to establish a de facto standard and to attract areas in Africa for example. I, as a broadcaster would like to see a single global broadcasters’ system,” said Franc Kozamernik, project manager at WorldDAB. WorldDAB also plans to launch a complementary satellite service. The launch is expected in 2001 but only if enough funding has been raised. Although prototype DAB receivers were being exhibited at IFA, few will be launched in Europe before next year. “I can’t understand why receivers are not going to be launched sooner at least in the UK where we have DAB services,” said Andy Bower project manager at BBC.
