It implements Spiking Neural Network (SNN) – a neural net technology that processes information based on discrete-time spikes. SNN is said to be more ‘biologically realistic’ than traditional neural nets and has potentially better performance-power characteristics
Darwin is described as an NPU – a Neural Processing Unit. It is made in standard CMOS. The research group was led by Dr De Ma from Hangzhou Dianzi University and Dr Xiaolei Zhu from Zhejiang University.
“Since it uses spikes for information processing and transmission, similar to biological neural networks, it may be suitable for analysis and processing of biological spiking neural signals, and building brain-computer interface systems by interfacing with animal or human brains,” say the authors of a paper describing Darwin published in the Science China Press
