EW BrightSparks 2018 profile: Orla Murphy

Electronics Weekly has teamed up with RS Components to highlight the brightest and most talented young electronic engineers in the UK today.

Here, in our series on the EW BrightSparks of 2018, we highlight Orla Murphy who works at Jaguar Land Rover, as a Black Belt Quality Engineer!

Her experience includes a joint project for Software Over-the-Air (SOTA) testing and validation at the company.

This involved designing a measurement system to capture all possible information from a download, to analyse performance. This included working across teams such as telematics, connected car, and the SOTA team.

The aim of the project was not only to capture information but to also have a data-driven approach to the development of features.

Challenges included developing, testing and deploying the measurement system in managers’ cars across three countries to collect over 13,000 download packets and related parameters for each download. This was then statistically analysed to draw conclusions about the SOTA feature.

Outside of work, Orla is also an active STEM ambassador and public speaker, giving lectures and talks about engineering to young people around the UK.

She was the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year in 2015 and the RAEng Engineers Trust Young Engineer of the Year 2016.
